Attending an anglo-dominate church can be a different experience for someone outside of this race, as I experienced, growing up as a minority in my small-town Assemblies of God church. My Mexican family was one of the few in our church, as each Sunday morning, the pews were filled with white faces, different than our own.

Yet my parents were amongst the faithful few within this church, as they had met Jesus before I was born. My mother considered my spiritual upbringing to be her personal responsibility and church attendance was not an option in our home, even though this was one of my first experiences with racial discrimination.

Not unlike many small towns during the 1950’s and 60’s, segregation ruled large, even in the church buildings on Sunday mornings. Understanding this now, I do not know why I would expect a different racial climate within my church walls as my Hispanic neighbors were not allowed to swim at our community pool, join Cub Scouts (as I personally experienced) and even given a separate cemetery, apart from the white neighbors living next to us. I have numerous stories of being personally discriminated against, yet at eight years old, when I was told I could not be apart of the Cub Scouts, I was deeply hurt and knew what I was experiencing also hurt the heart of God.

Little did I realize within these childhood memories, God was preparing me for His plan and toward my passion for His people — inclusion of all races within the buildings we build (we call them churches), meant to be our places of worship.

My upbringing was difficult, not only because of these instances of discrimination, but because I had an abusive father, who expected me to be loyal to my Mexican culture (as he saw it) and not the desires of God for myself. With every twist and turn, all the way to going to college, my father was unsupportive and threatened by my choice. God’s faithfulness to me, always reminding me His ways are higher (Isaiah 55:9), propelled me to persevere and pursue His purpose, even without my father’s approval. I was accepted to and attended Southwestern Assemblies of God College (now University) with no monetary resources, car, friends or church home.

While at college, I met my wife after attending a local church, yet her upbringing was racially and culturally different than my own. We have journeyed over forty years of marriage and ministry together, observing and developing a passion for racial unity in our churches. We desire for every tongue, nation and tribe to know the love of their Father and to feel family within the church walls, specifically amongst Hispanics, as this was the exact need I longed for growing up in my small-town church. The Hispanic population is hungry for Jesus! And I am passionate about assisting pastors and church leaders in building bridges between this eager population and their local churches.

God continues to use my story, even back from childhood to ignite my passion for this need. I am here to help empower the leaders of my Hispanic brothers and sisters, as well as coaching and mentoring them as they are on the frontlines of addressing this need for their inclusion in our churches. And I see large needs of pastors and church leaders from both sides of the aisle recognizing this issue, feeling the limitations of how to bridge the gap.

Thank you for your willingness to partner with my wife and I, as we continue to fulfill this passion sparked in us. We are honored to invite you in on this journey with us and know God’s work is far from finished in His people and how the church is culturally represented.
